Music in the Air

April showers bring May flowers – as well as a fantastic lineup of live music sprouting up all over town. This spring, Miami is a hothouse of jazz, world music festivals, top-notch classical performances and more.

Here’s a look at what’s hot:

JAZZ & LATIN

The Arturo Sandoval Jazz Club – Grand Opening
March 31
Grammy-winning Cuban trumpet player Arturo Sandoval opens his new jazz club inside Miami Beach’s historic Deauville Hotel tonight. The Beatles, Frank Sinatra, Tony Bennett and Sammy Davis, Jr. all played at the Deauville back in the day, and now the beat goes on. An impressive lineup of jazz talent from around the country will be making their way to Sandoval’s new jazz mecca. Check out the April lineup.

Jazz on the Green Concert Series
April 9
The Frost Studio Jazz Band -- a powerful eighteen-piece big band that performs a diverse range of styles, including swing, funk, Latin and contemporary jazz -- will perform. Bring your blankets, picnic lunches and lawn chairs and enjoy a lazy afternoon listening to jazz by the water. Furry friends on leashes are also welcome.(The concert green space next to Lake Osceola is located behind the Frost School of Music’s Gusman Concert Hall on Miller Drive.) 3 p.m. Free.

University of Miami Salsa Orchestra
April 20
Founded in 1993, the University of Miami Salsa Orchestra is perhaps the only Latin big band in South Florida. The band includes 19 instrumentalists, 8 singers, and a library of over 60 big band arrangements that range from traditional salsa to traditional jazz, Latin Jazz, and fusion. Its members are part of the renowned University of Miami Jazz Department as well as professional musicians who have played with such artists as Maynard Ferguson, Phil Collins, Tito Puente, Celia Cruz, Santana, and others. Tonight's show features Alexander Pope Norris—trumpet; Dante Luciani–-trombone; and special guest, Grammy-award nominee Sammy Figueroa—percussion. For tickets, call (305) 284-5813. 8 p.m.

Wynton Marsalis and The Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra
April 25
The Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra and Wynton Marsalis join Yacub Addy and his ensemble of Ghanaian percussionists as they celebrate the rich history and musical heritage of Congo Square, New Orleans. 8 p.m.

University of Miami: Roberto Sierra’s Sinfonia No. 2
April 21
Hurricane Wilma may have been a literal “blow” to Festival Miami 2005 closing night gala, but six months later the Frost School of Music at the University of Miami strikes back with the world premiere of Roberto Sierra’s Sinfonia No. 2. The Frost Symphony Orchestra, Thomas Sleeper, conducting will perform this specially commissioned work made possible by the Abraham Frost Commission Series. Tickets are $25 adults; $20 seniors; and $10 students. 8 p.m.

Greater Miami Youth Symphony - Instrument Demonstration

Sunday Afternoons of Music for Children

Concert featuring Florida’s Singing Sons Boychoir -- "Something to Sing About". There are few sounds in music as exquisite as those produced by a well trained boychoir.
